It had been a quiet evening—at least, that’s what Amber thought it would be.
Cocoa had invited her over for dinner. Nothing fancy, just two women catching up after weeks of tension surrounding Anthony. Amber hadn’t expected much. Maybe a few laughs, some wine, and the comfort of a familiar friend. But Cocoa had other plans.
They were sitting on the couch, plates cleared, a soft R&B playlist humming in the background. Cocoa hadn’t said much during dinner, only offering polite smiles and the occasional question about Amber’s work.
But when she put her glass down and leaned forward, Amber felt something shift in the air.
“Amber…” Cocoa said gently, her voice steady. “What do you really think of Anthony?”
Amber blinked. She hadn’t expected that. “What do you mean?”
“I mean, honestly,” Cocoa said, locking eyes with her. “Do you love him? Or is he just... a habit you can’t shake?”
The question struck like lightning.
Amber felt her breath catch. “Why would you ask me that?”
“Because I’ve seen you around him,” Cocoa replied. “You still light up when he walks into a room. But you’re also guarded, like you’re afraid to admit you care. And I need to know—because people are getting hurt.”
Amber was stunned. She never talked about her feelings for Anthony—especially not out loud. Not even to herself.
“I…” she paused. “I don’t know what to say.”
Cocoa sat back, watching her. “Say the truth.”
Amber swallowed hard. Her voice barely came out. “Yes. I love him. I never stopped.”
Cocoa nodded slowly, as if she already knew. “Then why are you letting Shayla win?”
Amber looked away, eyes stinging. “Because maybe he’s better off with her. Maybe I bring out the worst in him.”
“Or maybe,” Cocoa said calmly, “you’re the only one who ever really knew him.”
Silence fell between them like a heavy curtain. For the first time in a long time, Amber felt seen—and vulnerable.
She had spent so long pretending to be over Anthony… but Cocoa’s question had exposed the truth she was too scared to say out loud.
And now that it was out—there was no turning back
