Shayla wasn’t looking for proof.
She had spent the past few weeks trying to silence the voice in her head, the one that whispered doubts about Anthony’s sudden change in behavior. But when she passed by the upscale jewelry shop downtown, something pulled her in. The same shop where Anthony had said he’d picked up a gift… for her.
She wasn’t planning to stop, but the sparkle in the display caught her eye—and the face on the camera monitor in the corner of the store froze her in place.
There he was. Anthony.
Standing at the counter. Smiling. Laughing.
But not alone.
Shayla’s stomach dropped when she saw the woman next to him. It wasn’t her. It wasn’t a friend. It was Amber.
The employee behind the counter noticed Shayla staring. “Ma’am, can I help you?”
Shayla stepped forward slowly, pointing at the paused footage. “That video. Can you play it back?”
The worker hesitated. “I’m not really supposed to—”
Shayla’s tone sharpened. “Please. Just a few seconds.”
The employee glanced around and then gave in, clicking back through the playback. There it was—clearer this time. Anthony gently placing a diamond ring on Amber’s finger, then saying something that made her blush and laugh.
Shayla’s heart shattered on the spot.
He had lied. Again.
Back at home, Anthony greeted her like nothing had happened. “Hey babe, how was your day?”
She dropped her purse on the floor and stared at him. “Why was Amber with you at the jewelry shop?”
The blood drained from his face.
He stammered, “W-What are you talking about?”
Shayla stepped closer, fire in her voice. “The cameras. They caught everything. You told me that ring was for me. You said you were over her.”
Anthony couldn’t find the words.
Shayla, holding back tears, shook her head. “You didn’t just lie to me. You humiliated me. Again.”
She turned around, grabbed her keys, and walked toward the door.
“Where are you going?” he called after her.
Without looking back, she said, “Someplace where the truth doesn’t come with a receipt.”
